| There are two main dangers
floating around on the Internet today. One being Viruses "of course" the other
is Spyware/Hijackware. Both can contribute to a unstable system and cause the user
headaches. There are a few steps that can make you headaches go away and keep your
computer running like it should. To fully understand these threats, lets define them
first. Spyware: Any software that covertly gathers user information through the
user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge. Spyware applications are
typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be
downloaded from the Internet; however, it should be noted that the majority of shareware
and freeware applications do not come with spyware. Once installed, the spyware monitors
user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone
else. Spyware can also gather information about email addresses and even passwords
and credit card numbers.
Spyware steals from the user by using the computer's
memory resources and also by eating bandwidth as it
sends information back to the spyware's home base via the user's Internet connection.
Because spyware is using memory and system resources, the applications running in the
background can lead to system crashes or general system instability.
Now we know what it is. Here is one way to get rid of it. Spybot Search and
Destroy. Down load this and run the application. Read more about Spybot on their web
site.
Virus:
By know we all know what virus are but we just don't get, why a person would want to spend
time to write a program to cause someone's computer to crash. There is however, an
increasingly sinister side to the virus writer. Motivated by financial gain, they are more
and more likely to be working with spammers and hackers. The money is coming from the
spammers and we are seeing evidence that they are starting to employ the best of breed
virus writers to help them. This is evident in Sobig F, which turns a computer into
a host to send out millions of spam e-mails, often without the owner's knowledge.
Many do it for the technical challenge, although it is
actually extremely easy to write a virus, and does not require a genius IQ. Others have
even claimed that viruses are an art and a form of expression, and should not be stopped.
The anti-virus community chooses to express its freedom by ignoring that argument.
If you have an Anti Virus program now make sure you update
it at least once a month. Most Anti Virus programs are only good for a year and the
program will have to be renewed. Viruses come out almost every day. So you have to update
or renew you anti-virus program.
If you do not have Anti-Virus software on your computer
now, go to this link now and download AVG
Free Edition Anti-virus software and install it ASAP.
